Man Sues 'TRON'
04/01/2008 5:37 by Todd "TheReelTodd" Washburn
The United Digital News website, has confirmed reports of ''a man suing the fictional character of TRON from the 1982 cult classic film of the same name''. The tech news website, popular among nerd and geek communities, has been able to authenticate rumors that a man has indeed filed a lawsuit against TRON himself, the security program portrayed in our favorite film by actor Bruce Boxleitner.

Just to clarify, Bruce Boxleitner, who played TRON in the film, is not being sued. As was said in the opening statement: TRON, the fictional character in the film, is listed as the defendant on the legal papers filed last week in Seattle Washington.

Rodger S. Muller, proprietor of a small citrus fruit drying business, field suit against ‘'TRON'' because he feels unable to keep up with the growing demands of today's digital threats. Mr. Muller basically asserts that if TRON had done his job, then the ‘'grid bugs'' (what most people might refer to as viruses or malware) would stop causing trouble on his computer.

‘'Every other time I go to balance the books or order supplies for my business, my computer slows down and eventually crashes. I'm no idiot - I know what's going on in there. My programs are under constant attack from grid bugs. TRON should have either done his job better or just let the MCP run the system. Since TRON derezzed the MCP and failed to secure the system [himself], those gosh darn grid bugs are costing me time and money...'' -- Rodger S. Muller

There are several rambling quotes from the angry plaintiff available on the UDN website - many of which sound like an extreme TRON fanatic gone wrong or maybe someone who just needs a nice long, relaxing vacation under close supervision. Some of his quotes are fairly humorous, including a reference to the digitized orange in the film and how ''...drying orange slices isn't as simple as deconstructing them with a laser and storing them as data inside a computer...'' What?? LOL

Because there is no law against filing suit against fictitious people, or in this case fictitious security programs, there is a good chance the lawsuit will actually go before a live jury and we'll all get to hear about it in the news. Shortly after the suit was filed, judge Amelia Swensing ordered a full psychiatric evaluation of Mr. Muller before any court proceedings take place.

I don't know what to say, folks. Will this be good publicity for our beloved film TRON, or will the jokes start flying about how TRON fans have dried citrus fruit for brains? Either way, I suggest giving the article a good read when you have some time. It is a long article, and slightly disturbing at times, but worth a look:

That acronym (icbifya) stands for I Can't Believe I Fooled You Again! :-P

25th Anniversary of TRON
07/09/2007 9:20 by Todd "TheReelTodd" Washburn
It was on July 9, 1982 that the ground breaking film TRON was released upon movie audiences. The world got its first glimpse in to a little something called cyberspace long before the term cyberspace even existed. The digital world of TRON offered new and amazing 3D computer animation, the likes of which had never before been seen by movie audiences.

The visual effects were incredible and had many of us dropping our jaws in awe of its amazing look and style. The concept of taking a living, breathing human and digitizing him in to the world within the computer's active memory was equally as impressive as the stunning visuals.

In 1982, most kids were hooked on the relatively new form of entertainment known as video games - playing in the arcades and also at home on the classic consoles of the day. Home computers were just starting to catch on. Watching the character of Kevin Flynn being forced to play video games, from within the computer itself, was something that every video game enthusiast longed for... or at least many of us did.

TRON unfortunately didn't do well at the box office. It wasn't exactly promoted very well. I clearly remember seeing TV commercials for the film and wondering to myself, ''What? With all the cool stuff in the film, they're showing that?'' Many of us first learned of TRON in a TV special called ''Computers Are People Too''. The story they did on TRON in that TV special was far better than any advertising I saw just before it came out.

Poor promotion, perhaps along with an audience that didn't quite grasp the concept of a digital world lead to TRON not doing well at the box office. My first thoughts after seeing TRON (once I was able to come off the high of seeing it compose myself) was that it would no doubt be as big as Star Wars had a few years before. I didn't understand how it just faded away so quickly without the huge frenzy that Star Wars generated, but that is how it went 25 years ago.

Over the years, TRON has remained a favorite to many of us who were fortunate enough to have caught it in the theater in 1982. It has also picked up many new fans in the time since - many of which were not even alive when TRON first hit the theaters. TRON has, in fact, had more staying power and created more new fans over the years than almost any other film from 25 years ago.

Today, on this 25th anniversary, we are looking back on this amazing blend of energy, light, art, science, and storytelling. TRON is 25 and still glowing strong!

The celebration doesn't stop here. Our friend and resident pixel pusher Sketch has some cool TRON desktop wallpapers that are available for download. Special thanks to Sketch for taking the time to make these awesome wallpapers, based on the 25th Anniversary poster graphic he designed for this story!

There is additional news and goodies coming in celebration of TRON's 25th anniversary - one of which has been in the works for a long, long time and will surely have fans of TRON and TRON 2.0 grinning ear to ear.

Stay tuned, programs! These additional items will be revealed soon, as we continue the 25th Anniversary celebration beyond today and into the coming weeks ahead.

END OF LINE...

Actually, no - the end of line has yet to come...

TRON and Cindy Morgan in Starlog 354
02/20/2007 11:31 by David "DaveTRON" Arnspiger
First, I am not back. Just popping in to share a bit of news that might pass by un-noticed.

Starlog Magzine, Issue 354 has an article with Cindy Morgan about her time as Yori in TRON. There is also a mean spirited little cartoon in the letters section, and a page with fan web sites that mentions both Cindy's Site (www.Cindy-Morgan.com) and TRON Sector.

A couple of nice pics with the article, and a good read. Worth the money in my book.

About Video Games Live™ (www.videogameslive.com)
Created by two industry leading video game composers, Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall, Video Games Live (produced under their company Mystical Stone Entertainment, LLC) is the front runner in the field of live game music performance. Video Games Live is an immersive concert event featuring music from the biggest video games of all time. The debut performance launched on July 6th, 2005 at the world famous Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with the LA Philharmonic with over 11,000 people in attendance making it the largest video game concert in the world.

About the Hollywood Bowl

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl, the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 38th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2006, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the second year in a row at the 17th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.

Tickets ($3 - $65) are on sale now at the Hollywood Bowl Box Office, by calling Ticketmaster at 213.480.3232, at all Ticketmaster outlets (Robinsons May, Tower Records, and Ritmo Latino locations), or online at HollywoodBowl.com. Groups of 12 or more may be eligible for a 20% discount, subject to availability; call 323.850-2050 for further details.

TRON-Sector: a place for fun, NOT political debate
08/03/2006 7:56 by Todd "TheReelTodd" Washburn
I have received PM's about my decision to close a thread recently. This particular thread started out as a discussion about a recent movie and then turned in to a political debate about being American, what it means to be American, what's wrong with America, what the world thinks about America, and so on.

TRON-Sector is not the place for political debate such as this, and yes this subject matter is absolutely political. TRON-Sector is a place for TRON fans to gather and celebrate our love of TRON and our many other similar interests. Differences in opinion are a part of discussion. That is a normal and healthy thing. It allows us to learn more about each other and share our views on things. When these differences in opinion turn in to political debate however, the discussion can and often does turn ugly.

There are a million places to discuss politics on the internet. TRON-Sector is not one of them. Anyone who feels a need to share political views and/or debate them is free to do so as they choose - just NOT here.

Political differences can quickly turn would-be friends in to hate-filled enemies. Even when both sides try to put on their best polite face, there is often an underlying anger and resentment for each other. I am not saying political discussions cannot take place respectfully and without hard feelings, but I am saying they all too often don't.

I consider every active member of the TRON-Sector community to be my friend. I mean that. I've never before encountered a friendlier, more caring community on the internet as I have had the pleasure of being a part of here. I don't want to see it go away, or for some of my friends disappear because they were left angry and upset over political comments that offended them.

Although some were happy that I shut down the mentioned thread, some were not so happy with my decision. I respect everyone's opinion on that and hope that agree or disagree with my decision, that is at least understood why I did so.

For anyone else who would like to vent about it, please feel free to PM me. I don't mind, so long as the venting is respectful and not just heated anger directed my way.

To anyone who was offended by the political comments of others, please let it slide. Remember that we all have our differences in life and we're all allowed that. When people share an opinion that you find offensive, instead of getting angry and filled with hate, try instead to understand where they are coming from and why they think the way they do. Just because someone thinks differently than you does not mean that the two of you cannot be great friends. I believe everyone here has so much more in common with one another than they have differences. That is all that matters.

Now let us get back to what is really important - all things TRON!
