Steven Lisberger was born April 24, 1951 in New York. In 1975, a 24
year old Steven Lisberger attended a gathering of Boston filmmakers
where Dr Phillip Mittelman, President and founder of MAGI, displays
computer images in hopes that it would offer up a new options for
filmmakers.
In 1978, Lisberger and Donald Kushner work to complete an animated
film called Animalympics. While involved with Animalympics Lisberger
began working on an idea of a character named Tron that would be
created using computer graphics. In 1980 Lisberger and Kushner
approach Disney with Tron after working on the idea for years. After
some negotiations and experiments, Disney agreed to get behind them
and their idea.
In an article appearing in Rolling Stone#376 (August 19th 1982),
Lisberger recalls how he formulated the idea of Tron:
"I saw real-time animation for the first time, a little electronic
beam going beep-beep-beep across a screen. To me it was living
animation-I was thinking animation at the time. I had been studying
computer graphics and was aware that the technology was making big
leaps, both in the areas of producing small equipment that could be
put in the home and of generating images. When I saw that crude
little character in the Pong game, I realized that by melding the
two ideas, I could use computers to tell a story about video games.
It seemed like a natural marriage."
