Well, if you're good, you can brush the paint on if you need to. When it comes to most people who customize figures, they use brushes to paint their figures more than they use airbrushes or even spray cans of model paint. Honestly, I never heard of using an airbrush on figures, but when it comes to plastic models of figures and vehicles (sometimes at a bigger scale), airbrush is an option used. But like I said, I've never heard of an airbrush being used for an action figure.
Actually, for adding detail, I've seen someone use acrylic paint slightly watered down to paint into notches where the circuit patterns. I plan to do that with mine as well:
