  Games Sector: Space Paranoids

Space Paranoids is a freeware game that attempt to remake the classic arcade game seen with the film. I love what he's done so far. I can't wait to play the next version!

Download Version 2.2 Here (26 Megs)

From the ReadMe File:

Update on Space Paranoids Version 2-2

Added features:

Variable refresh rate

Modifiable Display Mode

Level Select at start of game

To install:
Unzip the contents of the Zip file into "SPACE PARANOIDS" from the original download.

VARIABLE REFRESH:
This is accessible via the Diagnostic Menu. Hit Start-Fire-Start-Fire (1-Space-1-Space)
when no credits are showing (Credit-Fire-Credit-Fire in FreePlay Mode) to access
the menu. The refresh can be adjusted and saved to "syncrate.dat" I am including a file,
"syncrate30.dat" in the folder. This can be renamed to "syncrate.dat" in the event that
the refresh rate is accidentally set to an unacceptably low value (can be set as low as
5/SEC but I do not recommend this). "syncrate30.dat" is the file set at 30/sec. This
should allow those users experiencing too fast a gamerate to slow it down to acceptable
values.

SETTING DISPLAY MODE:
There is a second executable placed in the folder. Double click on "DisplayRes.exe"
The program should check possible configurations for your video card and list them.
Input the desired resolution and hit enter. The screen should fill with "Space Paranoids"
in randomly colored text. When the screen goes blank hit escape. This has reset the diplay
for the game to the selected value and saved it as "displaymode.dat" I have also included
several files of "displaymode 400x300x16.dat", "displaymode 640x480x16.dat",
and "displaymode 800x600x16.dat" for you. Simply save the file as "displaymode.dat"
to set to that resolution.

Of note, the display program is extracted almost directly from the DarkBasic tutorials
and does not represent my own work.

Level Select:
This now comes on when you hit start. Use the arrows to select a level and space "fire"
to star at that level.

As always, contact me with problems.

OMISSIONS- If anyone detects material obviously derived from something of their own,
contact me directly and I will make certain to give credit where it is due. All images
were either made with Adobe, modified beyond recognition from an image, taken from
freeware/texture sites on the web, or credited above.

THIS IS FREEWARE. No one is to make money directly from this product. I would love
feedback. If modified, improved, used in some way, I would very much appreciate seeing
what you did. If you find a bug or better yet a fix, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.
When I get a site up and running, I would like to make all aspects of the game
available so people can modify the code and make their own levels. If anything is used for
another project, please let me know and get permission from the appropriate people above.
Please give credit where it is due.

If you wish to buy something, buy a Disney product, Kraftwerk or Ventures album,
Dark Basic package, etc. If you don't have TRON on DVD, you should.
It's these companies/folk that allow derivative shareware to be out there for everybody.
Also, if you like this, please support UTRON, glTRON, and Dark Basic Developers, and
everyone who influenced my decision to embark on this project.

BUGS- Please let me know if you run into trouble- The game is written in DarkBasic 2.0. It
runs fine on my computer. I am not to be held responsible for system incompatibilities or
crashes. You run this at your own risk.

KNOWN PROBLEMS

The game must be rebooted every few hours as it will deplete system resources over
time and crash.

The enemy I/O tower sometimes freezes on a level. This autofixes for reasons I
do not pretend to understand.

Tesla gate discharge persists sometimes post that level (level 13)- Corrects in
Level15.

System Requirements are assessed by the compiled DarkBasic and identified before the game
runs for the first time on your computer.

Running the game:

The game must be unzipped to your computer- The executable cannot run directly from a CD
as it will try to write some graphics and the Hiscore list to the Space Paranoids folder.

Double click on SPACE PARANOIDS.exe. Do not alter the file arrangement in the SpaceParanoids
folder.

Controls:

Arrow keys control the tank. Space bar fires.
"a"/"s" rotate the turret. "w" aligns the turret with the body of the tank (i.e.
points it straight ahead).
"1" is start and "5" is coin for credits. It is meant to run in a cabinet so
Credits must be present to start.

MenuAccess:

This allows you to change music, reset high scores, set the machine to free play,
or set deluxe mode.

You must be:

In the initial text attract mode (the first subroutine to run;
colored text flashing "Space Paranoids" or "Space Paranoids Deluxe" on a
black background).

WHEN CREDITS ARE ZERO. (If credits are greater than zero, "start" initiates
the game for play).

Then:
Press "Start","fire","start", and "fire" sequentially. Each button press
will generate a slight pause if detected.

"Diagnostic Mode" should appear. Follow on screen instructions (Joystick commands
are arrows).

Specific Modes

Free Play- This sets the credits to ten (allows 10 continues).

Deluxe Mode- Changes all identifiers to read "Space Paranoids Deluxe" for the
purist who notes this game approximates but fails to twin "Space Paranoids"
from TRON.

Reset High Scores- Resets the High Scores to the default set. If not reset, the
high score list is saved each time a new entry is made so that it remains
fluid on any machine.

MUSIC- Select type of music-
Midi files are included for types 1 and 2 (choosing 3 or 4 will cause the program
to exit).

MUSIC- This is meant to be personalized as you wish. There are 4 potential combinations of
eight tunes. These must be midi files (.mid). You can insert your own files by naming
them "type-number.mid" (i.e. "2-3.mid"= Music type 2 and tune number 3). Suggested files are
in the Music.txt. These can be found for download on the web. My classical soundtrack was to
reflect W. Carlos' contribution to the TRON soundtrack and was primarily synthique classical
with tracks from "A Clockwork Orange", "Switched on Bach", etc.
