Hi, I'm new here, and fairly new to Tron. I only play sp, as I find the mp for this game to be a "bit" too hard for me.
The light cycle grids don't make much sense to me, as some are very easy, others I just skipped through. What is most surprising to me is that they don't necessarily stay on a course of starting out easy, and getting tougher as the game progresses.
It seems to me the last race in the game, a sequence of three races, is the easiest.
I also did not see one disc arena in the entire game, though there is much to do about it in the tutorial. I thought maybe I missed them because I skipped some light cycle races, but there were none following those I completed.
Are there supposed to be disc arenas in the sp game?
Overall the game has a polished look and feel to it. The sound and graphics are good, but there was noticable lag in a couple of spots despite my having a pretty good system (X800XT, P4 3 Gig, 1 Gig RAM).
When I read during the end credits it's powered by Jupiter technology, I was not surprised, as the new F.E.A.R game is as well, and it's demo ran a bit laggy for me.
I am impressed with what the Jupiter engine can do, I am not at all impressed with it's lack of smoothness with even some high end systems.

Usee, you should give the Multiplayer another chance. Give it some time. I found it a bit hard at first, too. But eventually you get better with enough practice, and it becomes more fun.
For Light Cycles in Single Player, the AI is actually not that tough once you've played against real opponents in Multiplayer. At first the AI seemed hard, but eventually you learn the only thing they have in their favor is super-fast reflexes and they can turn on a dime. Other than that, they're pretty stupid.
For Disc Arena in SP . . . well, that was something that was planned. But it got scrapped. Or, more like completely changed. It became Multiplayer only. I don't know why, but I wish Monolith would have left at least one Disc Arena match in SP, against some ICPs or other opponents.
I have almost the same setup as you, and don't find the game to lag at all. (Same video card and memory, but Athlon XP 3200+ instead.) It runs smooth as butter. As for F.E.A.R. running on the same engine: yes and no. The Jupiter engine received many upgrades for F.E.A.R., that put more demands on the system than before. (Much more sophisticated physics, for example.) Also, the renderer makes more extensive use of higher polygon models, shaders, and all that nice stuff. So it's unfair to compare F.E.A.R. (running on Jupiter EX) to Tron 2.0 (Jupiter). Tron is a lot less demanding on the hardware.
F.E.A.R., on the other hand, I fully expect to lag on my machine. I plan to check out the F.E.A.R. demo shortly, to see what Monolith has cooked up in their latest game. From all the previews, I'm really not that excited about it. Maybe I'll change my mind after I've tried the demo.

Ya gotta wonder what "brainiac" made THAT decision.:@ Here I was thinking I'd not unlocked it by skipping some races.
That being the case, this game gets a very low rating from me, perhaps 60% or so, rather than the 80% + potential it would have had otherwise.
I thought the movie had some other kind of competition as well, like primitive rod jousting on little circles (not rings like in disc arena) you have to hop around on. If not it would have been cool to have in the game.
The lag is actually worse in Tron2.0 for me than with the F.E.A.R demo, but only in a couple of spots. Though they say Jup EX is more demanding, and yes, I did know there was the difference between Jup and Jup EX.
Thanks Red, I only paid $10 for the game used, so I can't complain too much.

Really, where are you getting your information from? Disc arenas were always a multiplayer mode in the design docs I have.

Greetings, Usee, and welcome to TRON-Sector!

You really should get out on the multi-player game grid! There's SO much fun to be had there. I'm a BIG light cycle enthusiast, myself - LOVE every moment on the light cycle game grid!
I sucked at playing online MP light cycles for a long time before I got any good at it. You have to give yourself time to learn and gain skill. Even when I sucked, I still had a blast though. Generally, the people you run in to on the light cycle game grid are pretty cool and fun to chat with while playing.
I hope to meet you on the game grid some time. In fact, there's a thread here dedicated to help TRON-Sector members hook up on the game grid!

From what I can tell, Monolith had at least considered doing a Disc Arena level in SP. But obviously they didn't follow through.
One of the promotional trailers shows the player on some rings being attacked by an ICP. This map must have either been scrapped, or morphed into one of the Multiplayer maps we ended up getting.
There's also evidence in the game files themselves. References to Disc Arena loading screens with descriptions for Single Player, that weren't used in the final game.

Must've been scrapped really early. I have designs dating back to the first two months and there is no mention. Hmmm.

Hmm, there was never a scene like that in the movie. Maybe you're thinking of the Jai Alai scenes |
Your absolutely right red, and I just discovered that in looking through some old Tron movie pics online.
I think I actually like my idea of the jousting better though, it would not only be easier to create graphically, it would be something of a totally different gamestyle, not involving any projectiles, and close up melee battle.
I was going over in my head simple mouse functions for it like left click=left handed swat, right click=right handed, left/right click=jab, and even a crouch/jab/stand combo to lift the oppponent up by the crotch and toss him.
Any takers on a mod????:>8)

The ring game would be almost impossible to port to a video game version. You'd need full peripheral vision to play that game. (i.e. you'd have to be aware of where you were on the ring and where the ball was at the same time.)

Unfortunately, there can never be a mod like that as long as Buena Vista Games doesn't help those of us who WANT to make mods: by releasing additional editing resources and source code.

Hmm, I don't see how you can say that Boingo. Isn't the existing Disc Arena Multiplayer almost the same thing? You're standing on rings, and you need to be aware of where the opponents' discs are at all times. Not only can the disc come from in front of you, but from behind as well, when players curve the disc and then recall it when it's behind you.
So if Disc Arena has been done, then so can Jai Alai. The only differences are that you have to keep more of an eye out above and below you, and the ball would probably travel a bit faster.

I guess because in the ring game so much depended on the angle from the other player, up to the ceiling and then down onto your ring itself. So... so much would depend on being able to watch the ball as it descends and being aware of what rings were gone on your own platform.
I just am not sure how that could be applied without 100% peripheral vision....
Know what I'm getting at? I'd be interested in seeing anything anyone game up with and gladly eat my words
