None of them do much traveling diagonally. My only hypothesis as to why is that they may somehow gain more power or be capable of greater speed when traveling in such a perpendicular manner rather than diagonally.

Maybe it just intuitively feels 'right' for programs to drive perpendicular to the grid.
Look at humans. A lot of our neurological hardwiring was shaped by earlier stages of evolution. It's something that shapes and influences our behavior in countless ways, even though most of us don't spend much time thinking about it.
Similarly, programs that have evolved from earlier forms (whether algorithmically, as part of some sort of iterative process instituted by Flynn, or just by being written on top of earlier libraries and code) might inherit some of the behaviors and 'instincts' of their forebears. So even though it's no longer
necessary for lightcycles to only travel in straight lines, programs on the grid feel an instinctive compulsion to align their bikes with the grid lines. Some portion of their code is derived from the classic lightcycle AI code, so that sort of behavior is 'in their DNA', so to speak. (Compare with Quorra, the ISO, who had no problem whatsoever breaking both stated and unwritten rules of the grid to rescue Sam. I don't think she'd feel that same OCD'ish compulsion for order that a Basic would.)
