Actualy, a few systems used cartridges 'back in the day'. Commodore and Atari come to mind...as well as the Coleco Adam (I actually HAD one of those

). I'm sure there were others as well.
I'm thinking the main reason was speed. Anyone remember the Commodore 1541 disk drive? You could have a pizza delivered in the time to took for a big program to load. Ok...maybe I'm exagerating..a little (but just a little). And don't even get me STARTED about tape drives *LOL*. A kid could hit PUBERTY waiting for something to load with one of those things. Another possible reason was it was easier for the little kids of back then to just plug in a game and go.
So, yeah...that's my theory on why some older computer systems used cartridges.
