Not everyone in life (or especially the computer, or in a movie) is or needs to be outgoing, flamboyant, witty, quirky or in the spotlight showing off mad skillz to have a personality, imo. |
Nah. I "don't like" Clu's personality. I can't find anything to dislike in Gem's personality except her lack of same. The first time we see/hear her, she's behaving like an automaton. She speaks about ten sentences in the entire film, and never once does she show any sign of thinking for herself, nor of actually *doing* anything. First she's just a robotic Armory worker, and then she's just Zustor's pawn; she dutifully brings him Sam (with very little dialogue) and then goes and sits in the corner enigmatically. The most interesting thing we get out of her is an eye roll when Jarvis tries to hit on her. Otherwise, all she does is pretty much sit around and act like eye candy. I have yet to figure out why she was even necessary in the film, or what she had to do with Zustor at all.
I'm not real happy with the Rinzler character, either, but at least his lack of personality is the POINT of the character. Gem? No excuse.
| CardioFunk Wrote:Gem is a jerk. She barely even mentioned that he was going to be fighting to the death. The way she says "proceed to games" makes it sound like all good fun, even though he was just arrested and forced into it. He wasn't forced to move forward past the armory, and there weren't any guards at that point. I don't see why she wouldn't be able to say more about what he's getting into. |
Well, I'm sure it's not her job to do so. And remember, the programs are all pretty well-versed on what the Games entail, I'm sure. Nobody had any idea Sam doesn't know. I daresay that's his own damn fault-- if someone tells me my main objective in something I'm about to do is "survive," I'm sure as hell going to be apprehensive and not gonna just go bopping in there like he does (and oh yeah, he does. Watch him walk-- he looks like he hasn't got a care in the world. You're not walking into a rave, dude. But then his attitude throughout the whole thing is surprisingly casual, so...)
