Tron rights?

on Friday, July, 18, 2008 4:35 PM
Hey everyone I'm new. I browsed around a bit and it's nice to see people who love Tron even more than me!! I still need to buy the DVD. *ducks for impending stuff being thrown at head*

I used to watch Tron so much growing up. We had it on VHS recorded off of HBO. It wasn't until I watched it a few years back (After getting into the IT/computer world of life) and realizing how far ahead of it's time it was.

Anywho, in apreciation of Tron I want to make a shirt I came up with. I have the design and stuff but am not sure how copyright and legal issues work with something like this so I'm hoping someone may have some knowledge on the subject. The design does not really take anything from the movie directly per say except the tron font which was on the internet for free and it's more the idea than the design. Any details on legality issues with making a shirt or something from a movie would be MUCH appreciated.

As soon as I find more out, I'll share the design here to see what you all think.

Thanks!!

I'm not a legal expert, but considering how many unofficial and unlicensed Tron shirts are out there already: I'd say you don't have much to worry about.

I'm sure DaveTRON or lurkinghorror could give you a better idea of what risks you might face, or how to go about getting an official license if you wanted one. (I wouldn't expect it to be cheap.)

Welcome to TRON-Sector, by the way.

You are normally allowed to print your design on a t-shirt as long as you won't sell it to gain money with it. It is for your personal usage and therefor totally legal to do.

At least that's how the law is in Germany. I don't know how it is in other states like the USA. But I think it is the same.

Sell them as "non-profit" to just cover the cost of manufacturing, then charge $30 to cover shipping and handling...

Greetings, ohbeone and welcome to TRON-Sector!

You're a pretty funny guy. You had me laughing pretty hard with the whole "I still need to buy the DVD" gag. I almost believed you for a second there. Heh...

Uh...

You were just kidding, right?

I mean... every self respecting TRON loving nerd owns the TRON DVD and a couple of back-up copies just in case one wears out...

he he

Just being silly, program.

I dig your idea on the TRON-themed or inspired t-shirt. I don't know about copyright issues, but I'm looking forward to checking out the design you're working on.

A couple of threads you may want to hit are:

What's with your name?

And...

Don't forget to PING in every time you have yourself Another dose of TRON

I think you'll enjoy your time here at The Sector

Damn, that's a good idea! I leant my Tron DVD to someone a few months ago and I still haven't got it back... I'm long overdue a Tron fix!
