Oh, man. That picture scares me.

I know it's impossible to say how Bonnie's preferred treatment would have turned out. Who knows, maybe I would have liked it equally well or better.

But somehow, I doubt it. From everything I've read/heard, it sounded like she wanted to make it a little too technical and way too humorous.

TRON has already been derided by critics for being too juvenile, as it is. I don't agree with them. I think it struck the right balance between humor and seriousness. But I'm pretty certain that even more added slapstick humor, would have made critics out of all of us.

@VRAM

I don't think there are any contradictions here. And I don't understand why do keep quoting "geeky"?

I don't know if there's a trend starting here, but people read the threads(I assume), then rewrite what the guys said on the same thread - even the same page within a day or two, like they can't even present the thread respectfully, they write the same things.

back to the topic at hand:Vram, You must like a rebuttal on your statements, since you know Bonnie will not argue with you..

VRAM Wrote:However, I have one thing to say regarding this interview: "I HAVEN'T READ MORE 'CONTRADICTIONS' IN A SINGLE INTERVIEW IN MY WHOLE LIFE"... and I quote...

interview>>I have never been able to understand the beginning sequence of the movie. How could we be seeing Sark and his bike against another program battling inside the ENCOM supercomputer when it is actually just a punk playing on a stand alone arcade unit? Is there a link or was it just "artistic license"?

"I had nothing to do with this sequence, sorry I cant help you there."

VRAM Wrote:Too "geeky" for her, I guess...

No it's not. Think like a writer. Are you going to start a movie with a kid playing an arcade machine containing a stolen game by a out of control CEO who may or may not have a live simulation of SARK as the lead character AI that the kid is unknowingly going to be dispatched by? Simply because it's part of encom, well maybe that works, hosted by the man whom owns the rights to the game nonetheless.. Not that that's all improbable.

are you freaking kidding me? who would say I made that part? It's a beautiful sequence on that machine, after the fact - but for a writer who dives into characters, a kid in the arcade isn't first order logic my friend, not without a backbone to show what technology is in the storyline somewhere, and it's not there. Just hints from the MCP bitching at Ed Dillinger.

That's why my conclusion is to trust the author, not make unprovoked snide remarks. The geeks are people building the machines, their stories, and arts, nothing more.

interview>>What the other story lines were going to be -- the script went through four or more revisions, right? What was it originally going to be?

"It was quite different in its original concept. I worked on TRON for two years before it went to Disney. I had Robin Williams (then a new star in Mork and Mindy) in mind as Flynn, originally Flynn was a pizza delivery boy who fell inside the computer and had to find his way out. The script originally had a lot more humor in it, and more layered characters. The bit who longed to be a program, the program who longed to be a human, etc. "

VRAM Wrote:OK, just fun stuff, nothing "geeky", am I right?

Yeah Mork and Mindy was awesome, I would have enjoyed Robin Williams in Tron if he was suitable. Tell me what's wrong with that? And the computer AI wanted to be human. I wonder what Data from the Star Trek TNG would have been like in TRON. not geeky enough for you?

interview>>How do you think you captured the spirit and hackers so well? Was it an accident or were there other people involved advising you about what the world of hackers was like?

"Thank you. I spent quite a bit of time at the Stanford AI Lab and at Xerox Parc researching the scene, it was not an accident. I met Alan Kay and we worked together from the start he was hired as the "technical consultant" on the film, although he later took his name off when all the scientific elements we had so carefully embedded into the storyline were removed by Steven and subsequent writers. However his input and my hanging out at these places was crucial, I think, to the vibe of the piece."

VRAM Wrote:
CONTRADICTION #1

OK, so all that "technical" stuff was in there from the beginning or not???

Are you blind? Stanford University vs. what? future cartoon land? where's the difference there?

interview>What was the writing process like? What was the original story like compared to the final scripted version?

"The writing process was difficult and eventually Steven and I had a falling out. During our time together, I would do the writing, Steven would read it and we would have meetings in which he would tell his ideas. Then I would go back and try new things. I did many treatments and full drafts of the screenplay. My final screenply draft sold to Disney, and although I had a contract to line produce, as often happens in Hollywood, it didnt work out that way. I think my original script was much funnier, sharper, wittier, smarter, than the final, though probably not as visually interesting. "

VRAM Wrote:
CONTRADICTION #2

And here we go again with the 'more fun, less technical' argument...

Writer writer WRITER. The fun factor isn't there for you to enjoy since there is no Tron movie produced by Bonnie. What are you arguing? Bonnie is insinuating the movie would bomb? no. She wrote a version you can't take and disect, so you think it's time to flame?

interview>>Did you enjoy watching Tron and when was the last time you saw it?

"No, I was too mad about it. I`ve probably calmed down some since then. I actually went to the premiere with Alan Kay and famous science fiction writer Harlan Ellison who sympathized with the "evisceration of my script." (he had read my original, which Disney had bought) and was a hilarious person to go through this experience with."

VRAM Wrote:
CONTRADICTION #3

Get your act togheter... so she sold the final or the original script to Disney???

Disney bought all parts central to all of Alan Kay's placement in the plot- and tossed them. I don't like it if someone takes my words, and tosses them.. what if a moderator took all your posts out of here and said you don't exist in Tron-Sector?

Who would you talk to when asked what you thought about that?

She doesn't get paid by you, and she used the circumstances in the discussion eloquently enough for anyone here to see how it's worded.

interview>>I saw you only got a story credit. Did you get to work on the screenplay and if not why not when you were involved with the story?

"I did many complete drafts of the screenplay. I consider myself the original writer of the movie. "Tron" was the name of a glowing character he had created for a radio ad. I came up with the idea of a guy who falls inside a computer, meets a video game warrior, and with his help, escapes. The entire basic storyline, and all main and subsidiary characters were mine."

VRAM Wrote:
Jeeze, onto CONTRADICTION #4

So she considers worthy of everything TRON storywise, except that first sequence???

going backwards-

Your husband, Alan Kay, is often said to be very instrumental in the conception of the laptop computer and windows style interface. Was he influential in your writing? Also, I see that he was mentioned as being part of the "crew" on the set of Tron. Did you work together at all?

"Alan Kay, my husband, is frequently called in the press "the father of the personal computer" because his group at Xerox Parc developed the graphical user interface which is ubiquitous now in computers. His influence was very strong on my drafts of the script he advised me to read early Heinlein, and worked with me both on structure, and on the computer science references in the early drafts. Unfortunately, much of this work did not make it to the final version. It is too bad, the movie would have had a richer subtext and been a lot better, I think. He was pretty upset about the turn it took after it went to Disney."

VRAM Wrote:
CONTRADICTION #5

So she really looked into the more technical stuff? Not too "geeky" for her after all?

going backwards twice, but in my perspective seven times.

Maybe this dialogue can remain answered, but it seems like you have a bias about something that I don't see..

Maybe Esotek will find Bonnie whom more directly can entertain you, that would be great.

VRAM can email Bonnie at her website www.macbird.com. I can't guarantee she'll respond, of course, but it's worth a shot if you need clarification.

So what do you think the scene really means?

remember...

Our spirit remains in every program we design

the arcade machines didnt need to be connected to the mainframe. every copy of Sark in every machine is part of Dillinger's digital "soul". once youre on the other side youre on the other side. we only need LANs and WANs on our side - the "real" world.

Yeah, but Dillinger didn't write the lightcycle game, Flynn did. Therefore it should be Flynn in there not Sark...but I see that scene is really just to say to the audience that this is what programs have to put up with.

Yeah but also you have to remember that Dillinger stole all of Flynns work. Sure he didn't change the names but you don't know when that game hit the open market. The MCP could have made changes to the program adding in the Sark program. But I myself never questioned this at all, here is a thing what if the lightcycle game the kid is playing and the Sark game are not the same game????

Think about it, it may just be going on at the same time in a different system. But I see that as simply a "When you mess up on a game a program dies" scene.
