R-Rated Sector

on Friday, March, 12, 2010 8:57 AM
When I came here from the poorly moderated and now defunct boxhat.com I specifically asked a moderator what the language level was and got the following response (pardon me for showing a PM):

Tron-sector etiquette
“Swea(r)ing on the site is considered a no-no, as you might expect. The site owner wants to keep things clean so kids can visit.

Talk about anything rude or naughty that's off the site is okay, as long as you are careful in how you describe it and include a warning that what they're about to visit could be rude or offensive.”

I completely adapted to that and since I joined in 2007 have seen tron-sector abide to that and be a wonderful place to hang out for people of all ages.

The past month or so things changed as previously mentioned and even ‘exhibited’ by even senior members. The admins have become hypocritical in their stance, and the site dropped from what I would consider a PG-13 to a definite R rating with the now liberal use of the F word.

Secondly, who was the original audience to the Tron phenomenon? As you already know from Lisberger’s own words, 10 year old kids. Now of course 10 year olds shouldn’t even be on the internet going through chat boards but the point is - Tron wasn’t for older folks, and if you think it is your being quite self-centered.

Will this site ever go back to what it was? Unlikely. But a few of you can make a dent by voicing your opinion on the matter, not those who regress to putting spoilers around the F word and other immature behavior, this topic is not for you, it’s for the rest of us who are actually trying to do some good around here. Maybe you've guessed already I’ll be out of the boards for now on since I no longer support the change I have witnessed and the new direction of what was for the most part a family oriented site.

Rezz-on

Yeah, if you were on boxhat and a thread went to the R rating it was usually moved to a more secure area of the forum, not that it's going to stop a child from getting that permission, but they have to agree to sign in, and that they're over a certain age.

I agree that there should be some type of parental control. Filtering, but not entirely deleting the post..

Perhaps a deterrent? The vulgar post has to be covered in black, linked to a page where you agree to certain criteria, simply to make a point, and show ppl that it's not a typical PG-13 forum post, that means you have to sign in, and if you are a child's guardian or parent and prove it to an admin, you could get permissions to see that users viewing habits.

Daddy-O,

This is an apology, to you only. This does not apply to ShadowDragon.

I am sorry if my post offends your personal sensibilities, but that is not what I am apologizing for.

Before I offer my apology, I want to make a few points clear.

1. This is a TRON Fan Site, not Disney.com
2. My intention in posting it was not the perversion of the innocent. I posted a TRON parody on a TRON fan site where it is relevant.
3. I broke no rule as there are no posted rules. Never have been. The Admins decide what is appropriate based on the situation. Having been an admin here once, that is a VERY tough line to hold and you never please everyone as you well know.
4. Auric, the guy who runs this site did not disapprove of my original post. Perhaps the shenanigans afterward, yes, but not my first post.

The rest of what followed was not entirely my doing and probably should not have occurred. However, when you get into issues of personal freedoms things get messy.

I can only apologize for my portion. I crossed the line by joking about other people using the word in those posts to taunt you and ShadowDragon (whom I will not apologize to). That wasn't cool and I should not have supported it.

I too am a father, and I taught my son that that word only has power if you give it power. We don't. It's just four letters. You obviously do give it power and that's good for you. We disagree.

So I apologize for adding to the taunting of you for your personal POV.

I apologize for the perceived problem you consider my post to be.

I just wanted you to know that I thought about it and what you may have felt.

While I would still post my original post because it was a TRON parody and relevant to this site, I should not have allowed that thread to turn into what it did. I should have helped the admins to diffuse the situation and keep control. I apologize for not being more considerate of your feelings in that regard.

Well, I actually do have son that's 10 and he does occassionally visit the site.

Part of me didn't mind the parody, but I thought in was kind of in poor taste and felt uneasy about it too.

But it was kind of uncalled for to have my head bitten off just beacuse I expressed concerns about it.

Coming from a conservative Catholic family, I totally agree with Daddyo with his stance on the F word. Tron-Sector is one of the few places on the internet where we're proud of not being obscene and it should be kept that way.

Granted, the original audience that watched Tron back in '82 has grown up and can say whatever they want to say, however, we still have kids visiting these forums - and Disney is definitely watching this website...this is a fact. I think it should be best that we maintain a PG rating throughout the site, especially in the upcoming months as traffic will definitely pick up.

Auric is working on updating the website and hopefully the update will include word filtering or something of that nature.

I apologize for not being on the site past couple of days, but being an admin is eating into my college life and I need to take a break before my grades start to fall.

I agree. Legacy popularity has attracted a somewhat less-than-favorable crowd. I won't say any names, but let's say that thankfully some of them have been banned. I for one find cursing on a family-oriented site such as this one, and hope that it dwindles. Let's restore Tron-Sector to its former glory, shall we?

I already explained my stance to Daddyo in a private message, as well as previously in the thread that prompted this one.

I'll repeat a few of the things I said to Daddyo:

This is the first time something even remotely offensive like that has been posted. I'm sorry if Daddyo or anyone is upset. But you have to admit that up until this time things have been relatively clean, yes?

I would hope that a one time "breach" of the etiquette on the site isn't going to swear you off Tron-Sector forever.

I tend to clamp down on rude behavior, but I've been busy with real life. That, plus the sudden huge influx of new members makes it difficult to keep track of every post. I ask you to please show a little patience and understanding. The admin team aren't perfect and can't monitor things 24/7.

Like DaveTRON said, sometimes it's a tough balancing act to decide what crosses the line. I didn't think the poster image in question was all that offensive. But I can see why Daddyo does. From now on, we'll try harder to keep things clean. But it will become more and more difficult, as we approach the release of the sequel. So we can't promise to always be able to immediately act on offensive posts.

As one of the other mods here, I've been tied down with life and a job and thus have been rather inactive. This alone has made it rather hard to stay a brush with a lot of the posts that have accumulated during this time.

Making people feel welcome to this site is a focus I've always had and plan to continue.

I offer up my apologies as well to help the site move forward and show we welcome members here and hope they feel comfortable during their stay here in the digital collective of Tron fans.

Furthermore, I hope you don't leave, Daddyo, because you've always been one of the more interesting members, in my opinion. Not to belittle the others though ^_^

Is too bad. Daddy-o was one of the more interesting ones, and even got a "Rezz Up!" from Lisberger. Which, coincidentally, I just saw that in the Art of Tron book: "Electronic world cityscape with effects animation added as the domains 'rezz-up.'"

Maybe you've guessed already I’ll be out of the boards for now on since I no longer support the change I have witnessed
But, he's doing what I think most people who are offended by TV or other things should do: change the channel or turn it off. So I give him credit because he did. (If you don't like the thread, go to a different one. Or in the case of the Sector: if you can't take one thread out of 5000 being adult humour oriented, then it's time to remove the Sector from your Favorites and move on. Maybe even start your own Tron forum where you can police it however you want.) Unfortunately, there was a little too much fanfare before changing the channel, imo.

I have a feeling he'll still lurk from time to time, might even come back. Never say never. There's no way he will be able to stay away from this thread; he'll at least want to see the replies. And if he comes back, he may just use a different alias.

I'm seeing a reaction here similar to the FCC and a few people on the Janet Jackson thing. Over-reaction. Thread being closed, apologies, admins saying sorry for not being able to donate their time, family, school, money and life to monitor the site 24/7, Auric possibly having to waste his time creating word filters or age restricted areas for five people, etc.

That thread was one thread in like 7 years since I've been here where I've noticed that word used or where one bit of questionable subject matter was posted, and all the sudden the Sector is like the dregs of the Internet and we have to stop what we're doing to move mountains, accommodate and apologize. Scary.

I'm offended that the Sector has to be so reactionary to this. Will anyone apologize to me for the Sector not living up to my expectations where I thought this was a place for "adults" (who have the power to 'change the channel') to come and talk?

I wish the world would lighten up a little bit and not take offense to every little thing. Why do you let such trivial stuff eat away at you so easily and so much.

PS: I still like you, Daddy-o. But I'm just sad that we differ on this one thing. order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

A thread with this title is nearly destined to spiral into problems and get closed (it's almost asking for it), but hopefully we can keep it pretty civil and say our opinions without getting too carried away or personal Let's try beat the odds and just let the civil discussions fade out and let the topic drift away over time...

There's nothing special about the humor, Bigbangbilly. There's plenty of other threads you could enjoy, too. We'll meet you over in those other threads that are actually cooler anyways...

I'm proud so say that I never actually used the f word on this site.... I have once or twice used a f with a few asterisks but that's about it.

I understand what Daddyo is talking about and I think we still are one of the cleanest forums that can be accessed on the internet.

I think we should just remember to be conscious of what we are actually posting.

I partially agree. I've always liked how Tron-Sector has been family-friendly and PG or PG-13 rated. However, DaveTRON's post was in good humor, and I refuse to be angry at him for it. Maybe it would have been better if the thread was never made, but that's beside the point. Sometimes you just need to see things for what they are: humor. You only make it bad if you blow things out of proportion.
