D'oh! You don't need to finish the light cycle races, in order to play in a disc tournament. But you do need the internet.
If you select Multiplayer from the main menu, it gives you a choice between disc tournament and lightcycle.
Anyway . . . I can't get past the second wave of Conscript's Revenge! If I don't keep hoarding the Turbo Curse, another player will pick it up and eventually use it. And when that happens, I usually die.  I wish the Turbo Curse didn't last so long . . .
