Yeah - me too. At least that's how it's visualization in TRON looked to me.

Perhaps it is more like a real logic probe though - something that probes in to what should be going on and then showing values of the code - perhaps it's intrusive the way it runs and would break through an unauthorized lock-down - like an I/O tower that has been illegally locked down. Or something like that.

Well, I always thought it was used for extracting information from or manipulating the mindset of programs. Especially since Sark's says something like this right before using it:

"The Tower Guardian is helping him, he thinks! Bring in the logic probe!"

With, "He thinks," being emphasized and "logic probe" being brought in, I figured it had something to do with information extraction, or mind control or manipulation.
But alas. I just read through this part of the Tron paperback novel, and I think I'm wrong. Looks like some of you probably have the right idea. Although it never says exactly what it's for, it has lines like the following in the book, which I feel more or less imply what it's for:

"It stopped before the door to the Inner Chamber... The logic probe fired multi-colored lighting... The door shook and, in moments, began to de-rezz. Sark watched with an ardent, poisonous smile."

"Yori and Dumont watched as the great door de-rezzed before the irresistible onslaught of the logic probe."

After Tron communicates with Alan-One, the following is written...

"Tron couldn't delay long enough to tell the Guardian what had happened, and the certainty that Sark would interrogate Dumont made the telling too dangerous."

The fact that Sark used the logic probe to gain entry into the Chamber and now will be interrogating Dumont leads me to believe the logic probe has already served its purpose. Especially since Sark says, "Take him!" to get Dumont out of there. If the logic probe was used to manipulate the mind, it seems to me Sark would've used the logic probe right then and there, rather than taking Dumont away.
