Here's why...

Thanks for sharing your personal inside story on the (previous) canceled TRON comic, Clavet.

I found that very interesting. It also gives good insight to people who don't understand very much about how the entertainment industry really works.

I originally wrote a really long post about how well you spelled out points similar to those I failed to spell out in another thread about a remake of a film that we all love, but we're not all happy about (the remake, that is). But I had to scrap the long-damn post I started to write. It was kind of pointless and I think I was just rambling on and ranting again.

I think it's great that you shared what you did though. I think people should know and understand more about how the entertainment industry works and what really goes on behind the scenes - mainly the creative battle between the artists and the owners/investors. It explains a lot and is very interesting stuff.

Hey, that's pretty cool, LurkingHorror! Do you have a personal website we could peruse?

And Clavet - I'm sorry about that. I now understand Disney didn't pull the plug.

I remembered reading an interview you gave where you explained more of the details. I obviously remembered somewhat incorrectly. But in reading the interview again, I feel they should bear at least some responsibility. Regardless, I'd still be interested in hearing about it at a Tron Convention

I understand you don't want to blame things on Disney and totally see where you're coming from. But I can't help but feel that they could've better adapted to the situation at hand, considering how much time and energy had been invested into the project up to that point. And also considering how much time has passed between then and now with still no Tron comic in my hand; where this time could've been used to finish it.

For those interested -- and I hope you're okay with me posting this, Sebastien -- here's a URL where Sebastien discusses some things regarding the Ghostbusters and Tron comics: http://www.dynamicforces.com/htmlfiles/tommy72.html Here's a snippet:
"I blame myself because I took a bigger bite than I could chew. I did not know, first hand, that Disney's approval process was so different than what I had already experienced with other companies. There was just no way for me to know that information for sure beforehand. It's like buying a car, sure you can read about the specs in the pamphlet but you don't truly know how the car reacts until you try it.

"So with all respect to Disney Publishing, they didn't do anything wrong. I signed a contract with them and agreed to follow their approval process (which on paper was similar to any other company's), but when time had came to experience it I was suddenly faced with a load of work I could not sustain.

"I relayed my concerns over their increasingly difficult approval process--that it was impairing my abilities to deliver work on a timely basis--but it didn't help. Eventually I had no choice but to drop the license. This wasn't an easy decision to make, obviously I am a huge Tron fan, but at the end of the day it was my only choice. The Tron comics were just not meant to be, at least not with 88MPH."

Thanks for your efforts, Sebastien. And the artwork looked like it would be fantastic. Here's a link to one of the artist's works: http://www.gabebridwell.com/tron_gallery.html. There's some really great stuff!

I'm getting out of here right now, and you guys are invited. -----^

Thanks Traahn, you did well in reposting that bit of information. That interview still holds very true. With my experience I understand things far better now.

I could not have hoped or ask Disney to change their methods. Logically I was the licencee and the smaller company, hence it was my responsability to adapt.

So Disney is not to blame, however I should mention that every hollywood studio has approval processes and each have different requirements and guidelines. Disney's were too much for me at the time and we were not able to reach a compromise.

SLG has many employees while I was only one guy (still am), so they will be able to handle the approval process very easily.

Thank you TheReelTodd. I myself am learning everyday on the business

Here is a FACT about the movie business : There is more politics in Hollywood than there is on Capitol Hill.

That means than every single project that is supervised or produced by any given "major" studio will have to go through infinite steps towards completion.

Think of it as the mathematical limit problem, if the limit is number 1 you always go near it, ad infinitum never reaching it....but you get close.

Movies are like that, they are close to what writers/directors/creators have in their mind but not entirely what they wanted due to Creative Decoherence.

Addendum : Creative Decoherence includes 3rd party involvment and Politics

Here's another insight into "my time" inside the world of Tron.

My intention was never to do comics based on Tron 2.0, it was a contractual requirement which I agreed to since I thought it would be fun to do, but my intention in getting the licence was to play with Tron, not Tron 2.0

The game is really fun to play, the visuals are hyper cool and I hope they do another one. Im also glad that Disney was behind this project and shows interest in the franchise. But my idea was to play with Tron and I had ideas I wish I could do one day

Give me 35 milion, a closed set and no Creative Decoherence. I'll dust off my Peter Lloyd and Syd Mead imagery and make something out of this world Oh well I can dream can i?

Hey, that's pretty cool, LurkingHorror! Do you have a personal website we could peruse?

Mt personal website for my work would be www.littlegloomy.com - I've worked on a variety of material, both all ages and very adult. I've worked for Disney and Slave Labor for close to a decade and have been pushing for this synthesis for a VERY long time.

But bear in mind, nothing on my website is reflective of a Tron project. In all honesty, this announcement is early. I would have preferred to wait at least another month. As a matter of fact, I have been quietly biding my time here for months, planning on announcing the project HERE first. Unfortunately, you all found out that this project had gone public before I did.

As a side not, let me take a moment to corroborate Sebastiens explanation of the industry. Although his contractual obligations and our contractual obligations likely differ, the gist remains the same.

SLG has many employees while I was only one guy (still am), so they will be able to handle the approval process very easily.

Well, not really. SLG is a very small company. They have many creators working for them, but this is almost exclusively creator owned material. There are only a handful of regular employees. I think you're just trying to be nice. You know the approval process is easy for no one.

That said, the few extra employees WILL likely make the situation easier for SLG. Every person helps and the staff at SLG, while small and somewhat dangerous, are crazy professional.

My intention was never to do comics based on Tron 2.0, it was a contractual requirement which I agreed to since I thought it would be fun to do, but my intention in getting the licence was to play with Tron, not Tron 2.0

Lurkinghorror I wish you the best of luck with the upcoming comic. I'm looking forward to seeing it once it's done and printed.

Clavet I salute you for your effort in making your comic. From what I've read and seen about the comic, it would of been awsome. You had a great artist for the comic and great ideas for the characters. I can tell you being a fan of the film, the comic quality would of been grand. I hope all your future projects turn out great with 88MPH.

It's great seeing you here at the forums.

Hey LurkingHorror! NIce to meet you in cyberspace

Hey you accuse me of being nice? I take that as a compliment No seriously I meant that SLG is more than just one guy, making it easier to handle the bureaucratic side of things.

I'm sorry if I jumped the gun on making this announcement but I myself have found the information on a public website, so I was sure it was ok to speak about it.

Anyhow I wish good luck to the SLG team and I look forward seeing the final product

Cheers

I've read your posts and interviews. You are nice. And that is a compliment. Or, in this industry, a deadly deadly insult.

You didn't jump the gun. I'm actually quite flattered on behalf of SLG that you took note of this and posted the news. Whoever leaked the information during the recent book expo jumped the gun. Not really, actually. As it's their decision to as to when to publicize the information. Not mine. I just mean that I wasn't ready. I don't have as concrete information to publicize as I would like. Art samples, accurate press release and the like. I'm sure you know the sort of thing I mean.

If you're going to be in San Diego this year, I'll drop by and introduce myself properly.

I recently went to the Sony Picture lot in Culver City. I was walking around the lot when....suddenly.....I found myself grinning like I never grinned before. I was looking at the Flynn's arcade.

I knew the building was somewhere in Los Angeles but I did not bother looking the address up before my departure, so when I passed in front of it I was simply speechless. I had found it totally by surprise. Of all the places this building could be, its litterally 2 streets away from the Sony Plaza building in Culver City.

I crossed the street, took a deep breathe, closed my eyes and touched the wall. I could imagine the year was 1982, at night, and the Encom van just parking right beside me. The arcade lights, the teenagers having fun. Oh man what a rush I was on cloud 9 !!!

Speaking for TRON fans across the globe, I'd just like to say: I am green with envy.

Fortune Favour You,

IMAGinES
