I remember reading somewhere were a reviewer of Tron said that the film was a "remake of the Wizard Of Oz, but with computers".
I feel that is not true. I maintain that TRON was an original story and here is why I think so.
1) Dorothy wanted to go to Oz. She sung about it. Flynn did not want to go to the game grid. He was abducted.
2) Dorothy was a “stranger in a strange land”. She was not all that powerful and basically got lucky in dumping a bucket of water on the witch. Flynn was a GOD in the computer domain.
3) The story of people overcoming adversity in strange situations/ strange lands is not a new concept. The Wizard Of Oz did not create that genre, but possibly had an early success with it.
4) Oz wasn't real. It was all a figment of Dorothy getting bumped on the noggin. The world inside the computer WAS real
5) Building on point 4: Oz was more of a generalization and conception of Dorothy's fantasies. It was fantastic with odd creatures, some scary and some helpful and friendly, but overall they were by-products of Dorothy's imagination and SHE conjured up all the settings. Her story followed her own rules and basically played out as a nice dream. TRON was the exact opposite. Flynn had no concept of or wishes to go into the computer realm. The world he found himself in was alien and ANYTHING was possible. The Game Grid for me was SO much more terrifying and hostile an environment than Oz was. Although Flynn was GOD in this environment, he never knew what to expect.
Of course, since DaveTron knows Steven Lisberger, he could basically shoot me down by saying Steven DID want it to be an Oz-type movie.
