Extremely rare MAGI animation discovered!

on Saturday, February, 09, 2008 3:47 PM

This animation made in 1970 was animated using the exact same process to create the lightcycles, recognizers and tanks in Tron.

I hope all of you CGI fans will find this clip to be as awesome as I did.

Cool find, Mr. Sinistar.

I love seeing those old animations. They may look so simple by today's standards, but back then, it was a sight to behold - realistically rendered shapes and object. They weren't photo realistic, but still very nice looking and gave a far better interpretation of anything than traditional hand-drawn animation of the time could do.

On a side note, YouTube is really getting on my nerves. It seems that they lower the data transfer rate on embedded videos just enough so that it keeps pausing momentarily every few seconds while it plays because it plays faster than the data is transferred. VERY annoying. I usually have to just pause, wait a while ('til almost finished loading) and then watch. It's not my internet connection or anything because I get very good download speeds on other things from other sites.

Just curious - anyone else get that kind of sluggish data transfer from embedded YouTube videos?

I get that sometimes. But what seems to happen even more often, is the video simply doesn't show up at all. Big blank space where the video is supposed to be. YouTube is obviously straining to keep up these days.

The animation might look primitive today, but for 1970 that was amazing. It was even in color . . . not many CGI presentations were in color back then.

When you look at it back then when this film came out back then it was in the forefront of having CGI back then. Even with what was done in the original Tron movie. I remember what's his name one of the guys that had worked with Steven in the background of Tron that with today's computers you can get theater quality graphics, sound, fx, and imagery in todays computers than you could back then. Computers in general have been jumping in leaps and bounds in that area. True back then this was top quality stuff back then compared to todays computer. I remember of something that for the computers back then the for this kind of animation there must have ben a continuous back up control or emergency contingency of the main computer went down and there was no back up on it.

VROOOOOOOOOMMMM!!!

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

Nice find.

I'm cold and calculating. Don't press my buttons.
