Cartoonist Ted Key Passes Away

on Tuesday, May, 06, 2008 10:22 PM
I'm sorry about this news, but Ted Key passed away today at age 95. http://www.cnn.com/2008/SHOWBIZ/books/05/06/obit.key.ap/index.html
You probably don't see or recognize the correlation between Ted Key and , but I assure you, there is one. You see, there's a line in where Flynn says, "Sherman, set the Way-Back machine for three years ago."

Here's the scene were Flynn says this:

This happens to be a reference to Rocky and Bullwinkle's Mr. Peabody and Sherman characters, which Ted Key created.

Note: The subtitles in the movie say, "Way-Back" machine, but it's apparently supposed to be "WABAC" machine.

Peabody appeared in these segments alongside his adopted boy, Sherman (in a twist on the "a boy and his dog" stereotype). Peabody, who was a genius (and arguably a polymath), decided to adopt Sherman so he'd have some company in his life. Sherman's personality was that of a naive but fairly bright, energetic young boy. They both wore black, over-sized horn-rimmed glasses. The voices of Peabody and Sherman were provided by Bill Scott and Walter Tetley, respectively.

In the series, Peabody constructed for his and Sherman's use the WABAC (pronounced "wayback") machine, its name also a play on early computers such as UNIVAC and ENIAC. The WABAC was a time machine which Peabody and Sherman would use to travel back in time to witness various historical events.

That was a great cartoon. I always enjoyed watching those when I was little. Hmm, I just noticed more than a passing resemblance between Mr. Peabody and Dogbert.

Wow - I never realized that the "way-back machine" in TRON was a reference to the "waback machine" in Mr. Peabody.

Now that you posted the image of the show, I vaguely remember watching it as a kid. Mr. Peabody, the intelligent, fluent in English dog who wore glasses, a bow-tie, and no pants, would visit historical events and they would be depicted in humorous ways. I didn't quite understand it all as a kid, but it was fun to watch.

Excellent TRON tie-in, btw. I never would have picked up on that.

I remember that line but never really brought it up to that. When I think of it now it does goes towards that particular cartoon Since it it referrs to the time machine they used for goig back in time to different parts of history.

To compute or not to compute that is the question at hand. Tis nobler to compile in C++ or in TASM.

The quote by Flynn was probably more familiar to watchers in '82, since Rocky and Bullwinkle was on syndication in the 70's. I found the complete series on DVD, and will buy it for my little one as a great (and twisted) history lesson.

Btw, what the hell is behind Flynn's head in that scene?!
