Auric is back from FunSpot

on Monday, June, 02, 2008 1:26 PM
Okay gang this will be a long post. I've broken it down into sections with links below...

FunSpot:
First of all... if you are a classic arcade gamer... you must GO TO FUNSPOT. Being the largest arcade in the world doesn't say it all... I walked in and was transported back in time to the 80s. Journey was (literally) playing overhead and the white noise from video games was everywhere. Phenomenal place. They have over 500 games, and the best of the best where there to throw down. It's Amazing.

The People:
I was worried that, being new to FunSpot, I might end up being blown off by the regular (and world class) gamers. Not even remotely.... Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Willing to share tips and tricks and even encouraging you to go after something they held a record in. Many of the people seen in The King of Kong were there and happy to have us. Walter Day is a selfless person and I admire everything he does for the gaming world. Mark Alpiger posed for this shot (a spoof of the KoK DVD cover).

There were more than a few people wearing Tron related shirts...

History:
They unveiled an actual Computer Space machine on Friday. For those of you that do not know... it's the first arcade game ever created. It was in mint condition and played like a bad version of asteroids. The bald guy is me

The Tournament:
They had several specific tournaments going on that I entered, but I was really there to play certain games. I had originally wanted to go for Xybots, but decided against it when I met the two best players in the world at it. So much for that (great guys btw)!

I also had planned on taking on Space Ace, but they only had a Daphne version of the game, and it didn't even work right.

I ended up playing a few games that I did not intend to play: After Burner and a game called Cheeky Mouse. I'll didn't take home the gold on Cheeky Mouse, but I did set a World Record for After Buner! Eat your heart out Kevin Flynn!

The best part of the trip was something that happened to my buddy Mark. He came with me to have fun and just play some games... and then he saw the Contra machine. He had not played the arcade version in 20 years. The guy set the world record mark on the darn thing!!!

But the story gets more interesting... A guy by the name of Isaiah 'TriForce' Johnson wanted it too, so he went and beat Marks score, claiming the title. Then Mark beat it back from him later in the day, only to have it taken away yet again by Triforce once more. Since we had to drive back on Sunday, Saturday night was it for us, and at 11:47pm Mark put in his last quarter. His game was going well so I left him and

Sounds amazing! I wish I could've gone, but I was busy
Anyways, I'm glad you had a good time, and congratulations on the world record! And that was amazing story with Mark.
I am disappointed though.
No pictures of the TRON arcade!
I was wondering if you made any extra shirts though, let me know.

They had a Xybots machine at 1984 in Springfield (I've mentioned it before), but the last time I went, it was broken.

WOW! You set the world record for After Burner?!? That's awesome! I'm pretty good at the new After Burner game that came out about 2 years ago, but I reek at the original and the sequel.

That must've been fun meeting all of the Twin Galaxies people and world record holders. King of Kong is my favorite movie (even though I can't last more than 10 seconds in Donkey Kong)!

It's unfortunate to hear that Space Ace was messed up. Did Dragon's Lair work alright? I've never seen an actual Dragon's Lair machine in person. I'm unfortunately stuck with the low-quality Sega CD version.

I think the arcade game I'm best at is Star Wars Trilogy Arcade (not Atari Star Wars), which was made in 1999 by Sega. On the machine I play on, I can get a perfect score on the first lightsaber duel (with Boba Fett), but I end up dying twice on the Death Star II level. And when you die, the game erases your score for that stage entirely, so that stinks. I'm not entirely sure what my personal high score is, but I know I'm pretty good.

Man, I've gotta head to Funspot someday. Sounds like the kind of place I'd have a blast at. abortion pills online abortion questions cytotec abortion

Thanks for the recap of your time in classic arcade heaven, Auric!

I used to love the game Afterburner. It was one of those more expensive games of the time, costing $.50 so I didn't get to play it often. It was always a rush to play though... even if a short rush in my case. Had to budget my quarters back then, so I usually dropped them in to games I lasted a little longer in. Congrats on the record in the game. You know - that game still holds its own today - what an awesome, high-action game!

I loved the the story about Mark on the Contra machine. Dueling high scores! The fact that the place kept the power on past closing time because he was about to set a new record is frickin' awesome! The respect they have for the art of classic gaming is something I never witnessed back in the actual heyday of arcades. When it was closing time in my youth, they would just shut you down and force you out and that was that.

Looking forward to the video clips.

Heh, I think people just dislike Mitchell because of his attitude.

(I do admit the whole video tape thing was extremely dirty but I know that he was actually at Funspot. The people who made the documentary/movie probably didn't think it was important or missed it. I read up on the whole controvesty-- about him being painted in a negative light, but to be honest? The video tape incident stood out more than the supposedly not appearing at Funspot... but that's a whole another story!)

Sounds like you had a great time! I wish I could get to a place like that, but alas, I'm stuck in middle of nowhere. XP

Did they have a I, Robot machine there? If so, that would be extremely awesome.

I would highly doubt that..

According to KLOV, only 1,000 I, Robot machines were ever shipped to the US, even fewer numbers for Sega's 1991 Star Wars Arcade (which I have for 32X, really fun!).where to buy abortion pill abortion types buy abortion pill online

Sounds like a fun time. Glad you got to go.

Walter even called Billy Mitchell to have him congratulate Mark over the phone. Billy was a classy guy to Mark, and I'm on record saying he's not the scumbag that KoK paints him to be.

True, King of Kong didn't portray him very well. But I agree with Kia that it was his attitude and things he said more than anything... and that relates to his personality, in general. That is, unless he was told to act a certain way by the producers or had words put in his mouth by them.

The video tape is Billy's main offense, truthfully. He even admits it was done in poor judgement. I honestly thought he was a total jerkoff from watching KoK, but I've learned from some of the real people involved. I have yet to meet Billy, but everyone (the people that matter) says he's a class act.

He had all sorts of things printed up for the tournament. He did all the signage at his expense, as he can afford it and TG can't. He even sent up some special FunSpot X hot sauce bottles for the players. I got one and I'll snap a pic of them.

I'm not defending him persay, but I believe in judging people for myself. I *love* KoK and what it has done for the arcade, I just think you can't take it at 100% face value. BTW if you own KoK, watch the Joel Hedge extended interview... the Xybots bit is a riot.

By the way.. check out the KoK Sequel...

Hey, anything is possible...I remember seeing I, Robot machines (yes, I said machineS) at a couple locations here in smalltown Wisconsin back in the day. This one waterpark in the Wisconsin Dells even had a sit-down Missile Command which was also rare, if I remember correctly.

Here is the first video:

Auric's Video of the Main Room at FunSpot

Oh, and they do *not* have an I, Robot on the floor, but I think they have one in storage (they have 250ish games they don't even have a place for).

About your vide: YAY TRON! And I noticed something. At around 4:20-4:25 in the part where you show Galaga (shortly after showing TRON), there's a machine next to it with a TROn handle, blacklights, and two buttons, but it doen's look like TRON. What gives?

Honestly, for anyone that is a fan of the arcade of yesteryear, it is *the* destination. Game, Set, Match, End of Line, etc.

BTW that video is only the CLASSIC room. And only part of the third floor. The other part was the tournament room which I'll also have video of later. The second floor was bowling, 1990s video games and pinballs, then the bottom floor was ticket games, racing games (Daytona, Afterburner cockpit, Outrun car, etc) as well as skee ball and TWO places to eat.
