I was emulating Tron in MAME and was messing around with stuff like the sound test and other neat stuff that comes with MAME. Well, there's a Graphics viewer that they added recently so I thought I'll load some of my favorite games and see if I can rip some sprites.
It's hit or miss on some titles but fortunately, Tron and Discs of Tron loaded quite nicely.
Then I noticed something...
...I discovered a sprite I never seen before. A Solar Sailer!! I also found the recognizer sprite, which I've never seen before (after some research, I found out that it's in the later tank levels). Here they are:
Apparently, Tron loads different "palettes" for each game. As you can see here, if the recognizers were displayed turning the MCP game, they would be green. If Tron were to be displayed during the lightcycle game, his flesh color would simply disappear.
It looks like the solar sailer was suppose to be in the gridbug or MCP game (gridbugs makes more sense to me anyways). Here's a collection of all the movable sprites in the game. Note the palette color changes:
Forgive me if this has been discovered before.

Interesting to think about how the Solar Sailor could've been used. Recognizers are invincible, I think. Hopefully one of the world record holders will pop in and correct me as needed.

TRON does not have a true killscreen. Once you reach screen 255, that screen repeats for the rest of your game. If the game stopped there, then the most you could get is just over 4.3 million with point pressing.
