Canon?

on Tuesday, June, 01, 2010 7:16 PM
Hey everybody, first post.

A couple of months ago I realized I had somehow become a huge tron nerd. It was weird because I had never been into something so particular, always more general things. Anyway, I watched the movie a billion times, then I played Tron 2.0, then I read that recent graphic novel etc etc.

Anyway, in a couple of interviews I heard mixed things from people about what exactly was "Canon" and what wasn't...and why?

Can someone please break it down for me?

Hey, welcome to Tron Sector.

There has been a very great amount of discussion on the canonical status of TRON 2.0 concerning Tron Legacy. Officially, the TRON 2.0 storyline will be disregarded in Tron Legacy, so you can expect parts of Tron Legacy to contradict with some of TRON 2.0's story, since it can be assumed that nothing in that storyline ever actually happened. For example, Lora is alive in Legacy's story (while she isn't seen in the film, it has been revealed via the ARG campaign that she is alive), while she is dead in TRON 2.0. The TRON: GHOST IN THE MACHINE graphic novel was a sequel to TRON 2.0, following its story arc and canon and, as such, will also likely be disregarded in the Tron Legacy story.

Chart of canons in chronological order:

............----->Tron Evolution----->Tron Legacy
TRON -|
............----->TRON 2.0/Killer App---->Ghost in the Machine

Well... as I stated in a previous thread, the perspective of the central character in the comic is shown to be one lost in a false reality burdened with artificial memories. It's the story of a single experiment and is only nominally reliant upon specific canon (and that's of the original film) to work. So there is no (as of yet) revealed reason why the story cannot co-exist with the new film - provided we accept certain presumed "factual" memories to be extensions of the established artifice.

My understanding is that the makers of Legacy are disregarding the material established in both 2.0 and Ghost in the Machine, as is certainly their right. But all of these Tron stories are legitimate and official explorations of the Tron universe. So in this instance, no one decides what is canonical or isn't canonical except the individual fan.

It's like the Star Wars films. I ignore the prequels--as if they never existed.

Ha! Same for me with Star Wars, though I do cherry pick a couple of choice bits of info from the prequels for my own personal understanding of the Star Wars history.

Not much, mind you. Just a tiny little bit.

Stick to the movies for canon, the rest is fanon. There's nothing wrong with enjoying other peoples' ideas, but unless it came from the mind of the original creators, the only differences between the fanon you create in your own head and someone in the entertainment industry creates for media to purchase, is that you are not making it up for a living and a lot more people see the industry work--money and coverage. Just because someone got the rights to make new material in that universe, it doesn't mean they are creating concepts the original creators agree with or have given equal rights or status. The original creators usually have the full rights to allow people to play in their sandbox, make a new sandbox, and make some money off of sales, but they also have full rights to dismiss any and all of it, including their own ideas. It's fun, and can be impressive, and can even surpass the originals, and deserve total respect and praise, but if it's not from the mind of the originator, it's not canon unless the originator says so. This in no way means Tron 2.0 is not its own canon, or not deserving of the honor for quality and imagination's sake. This in no way is meant to be disparaging at all. You can have your opinion that you like it a lot and think of it as canon, but officially, the fact is, it's not unless the originators say so. The greatest thing about the fanon, other than the joy and inspiration it brings through itself, is that it led to a new movie, made with love.

By ignoring the fanon (except in tributes), the creators are free to decide where the story goes, and what happens to which characters, with major influences coming from real life restrictions or opportunities, such as, which actors are still interested, which actors can even return, which are still alive, and things like that, that can stop an idea cold, or give an idea thrust.

As much as I half-enjoyed Disney's marketers claiming Tron 2.0 was being treated as a sequel to the original movie at the time... deep down I've always wanted a "movie" sequel to the original. I actually didn't like hearing Tron 2.0 was being treated as a sequel because I saw it as a cheap way out of making a true Tron film sequel(s), and feared Tron would forever live with just one movie under its belt. I've always been "at the ready" to drop Tron 2.0 canon in favor of an actual film sequel's canon.

If Kosinski had been making "Tron 3.0" instead of what they're doing, I'm sure people who never heard of the game would've been, "Uhh, where was Tron 2?" Not that that's an excuse to excuse the Tron 2.0 canon, but it would've made for some interesting conversations.

Here's how I look at it:

What if Alan had a kid = Tron 2.0 + Ghost in the Machine

What if Flynn had a kid = Tron Evolution + Tron Legacy + Tron 3

Either way, I like both storylines and I thought the comic books were very neat.

Also, yeah, Star Wars prequels don't exist for me anymore LOL.

Hey thanks guys for clearing that all up for me. It is all rather interesting.

Something else that is non-canon that no one has brought up is the Tron world of the Kingdom hearts game that introduced TONS of new stuff.

I guess I can kinda pick and choose and create my own makeup of what Tron means to me. where to buy abortion pill ordering abortion pills to be shipped to house buy abortion pill online
