The easter egg you're referring to was removed from the Blu-Ray rerelease.

Maybe they gave up waiting for someone to notice the joke.....

No reason was ever give to the best of my knowledge, but my guess is that they had licensed the use of the character and sound effects from the game from Midway, who was the US distributor of the game at the time. Midway went out of business a year or so ago, which would mean that Disney would have had to re-obtain the character/sound rights from Namco, the original developers and current rights-holders.

That's mostly an assumption; I'm not entirely sure how usage rights are handled in that kind of situation.
