Symbols in TRON:Legacy aka TRON:Symbology

on Friday, June, 14, 2013 10:11 AM

We all know the Tron "T" that belongs to Tron himself (and Rinzler for good reason).
There are also the ISO symbols, which I'm sure someone else would be happy to explain.
Then there is the "89" symbol that reminds us all that FLYNN LIVES!

BUT there is this mystery to me of the TRON styled "3" that is, I think, attributed to Rinzler for some reason? Anyone know the origin of this symbol?

Thanks! I searched the forum as best i know how and surprisingly found no discussion on symbols. Maybe it's buried deep? I hope someone can school me and back it up with a link or something.

I asked that question recently and we don't have any special incite into why the number 3 shows up so much but there is some thoughtful speculation. I don't know how it could be attributed to Rinzler; it's not directly connected to him. The closest it comes to Rinzler was on a door of Clu's ship and on the ground when Rinzler was tracking Flynn. But it's on the floor of the recognizer, the floor at the armory, the door entering the games, inside Flynn's light cycle, and of course on Sam's helmet and on the scoreboard of the games.

If I remember correctly, as for the ISO symbols, the hex with the V indicated female, and the hex with the T indicated male. At least, that's what I read you were given to choose from in a video game to determine your program's gender.

Which brings up a whole other question about gender when it comes to ISOs as opposed to programs, but I'll let that sit.

As for the three, I'm not sure exactly what it means. I have some ideas though.

First, there were three builders of the Grid initially. Tron, Flynn, and Clu.

Second, it could refer to the three Flynns, Flynn, Sam, and Clu. Sorta.

It could also refer to the fact that TECHNICALLY, Legacy is the THIRD entry into the TRON universe in a visual medium. TRON 2.0 came out in '03.

There are three points to a T.

The number 3 has a lot of religious significance.

Other ideas that are specific to TRON?

That's very insightful. I've never thought of all the connections that "3" could be made to.

I just thought..okay, he is Combatant 3 on the Game Grid.

Groupings of people throughout the Tron films:

  • Alan, Flynn, Lora
  • Flynn, Ram, Tron
  • Flynn, Tron, Yori
  • Flynn, Ram, Tron
  • Clu 2, Flynn, Tron
  • Sam, Siren Gem, Siren #3 (speaking credits)
  • Sam, Disc Opponent #1, Rinzler
  • Clu 2, Jarvis, Rinzler
  • Clu 2, Jarvis, Sam
  • Flynn, Quorra, Sam
  • Castor/Zeus, Sam, Siren Gem
  • Castor/Zeus, Quorra, Sam
  • Castor/Zeus, Quorra, Siren Gem (triangle)

This doesn't even take into account Tron 2.0, Tron: Evolution, or Tron Uprising, but there are plenty of character groupings in threes.

Probably because character groupings in threes tend to be quite popular in films, period. Aside from pairings, it seems to be the sort of "magic number."

What do you want? I'm busy.

Correct me if I am wrong, but Kevin & Sam are the only users to have entered "The Grid" (the server setup in the basement of Flynn's arcade). The number 3 only makes sense if another user visited the grid. Is it possible Kevin shared his secret w/ someone else before Legacy???

AH, but three people LEFT the grid. So there's another set of three: Flynn, Sam, and Quorra all lived in both worlds.

It would be interesting if it's a hint to TR3N, that there's a third user. Mayhaps that's why Alan was so "Wouldn't that be something?" Maybe he knew what was going on, but had no Clu (pardon the pun, couldn't resist) how to help out.

Somewhere I've wondered that in at least one thread, but without making Alan malicious, I can't think how he would just sit on the knowledge for 20 years and not do anything about it...

Perhaps he discovered it more recently, and honestly was incapable of helping for whatever reason. Then comes the page, presumably from Flynn, so Alan thinks something has changed. But he's old. Assuming he was in his 30s at the time of the original, he has to be in his 60s by the time of legacy. Who better to send to Flynn to help than his Son, who has been acting out cuz his dad is missing? As for not telling Sam, Assuming the situation above, I could see Alan not wanting to give Sam any false hope. As far s Alan knew, Flynn was trapped forever., with apparently no way to contact Alan until the page came. He was all but dead.
