I think there was a discussion here about Tron on Blu-ray a while back, but I can't find it at the moment.
There's been no word or rumors about it coming out on Blu-ray, any time soon. I'd expect Disney to do that when the sequel arrives in theaters. Makes the most sense to me.

Holy Moly. That's a long long time. In Tron time, I think that is like 22,000,001 microcycles. Way too long to wait.
I sure hope it comes out before then.

The 40GB PS3 is only $399.00 and the 80 GB (when available) is $499.00
No point in getting a Blu Ray player (for movies) though, unless you have an HD TV to play it on. You won't notice a difference on a regular CRT television. Also no point in buying an HD TV unless you can get the max resolution.

Hmm, that amazon link seems promising but eh, email alert ahoy!
And dude, don't knock PS3. It's stable unlike a certain other console. :P (Though, I gotta feel bad for the owners of 360. Microsoft still refuses to outright fix the problems and instead extends the warranty and tossing on "bandaids" )
...yes, I do love my PS3 mainly because it's actually quite stable compared to the problems PS1 and PS2 had. They got it right the third time!
And of course, I got it when I had a regular tv, didn't bother me one bit 'cause I needed something to replace my PS2. :P
I'll be running off now to play some moar MGS4 and watch Tron on it~~~ (Just need the bluray version...!)
Though! Off topic; I've noticed that Enchanted's Blu-ray version has everything subtitled and that surprised the heck out of me. If they're gonna keep up with this trend for /all/ of their blu-ray, I'm gonna be happier than a pig in mud if that's true for Tron's special features Kia: Cool. 1) I wasnt knocking the ps3, my coworker has 2 of them an NTSC model and PAL.
2) you guys are shafted with the warrenty of the 360 unit but thats the way american law is written, in Aus is that we still have fully free (postage in to MS, and back again) with full hardware replacement at no cost warrenty on the unit.
the way the american law is written (to my belief so correct me here) is 3 month warrenty minimum.
the way australia's laws are written is RMA back to base lifetime warrenty, should a company not honour this then our government chucks a shit fit!
3) PS3s are being made cheaply nowadays so the lasers in them arn't upto spec.. lol so expect them to die within 3 months. Kia you got in early which is good congrats on that one and hope you love and enjoy your console.
4) might i mention that sony sent everything they could at one Aussie that fought in a court of law about modding ps1's to play personal backed up games and that the mod was not a circumvention to piracy.. they lost, an more then a few million down the drain on that one.. funny enough the second that law was passed that mod chips were legal in australia(previously it was a grey area) is that sony IMMEDIATLY stopped all ps1's being made and released here. (lesson learnt?)
might i also add how slow Sony are to grab hold of how the market swings, Microsoft executives are very very smart when it comes to the xbox.. we all know modding them can unlock so much, the 360 not so much but we are all still working on that.. is that when the market swings MS are there and ready, they lernt alot with the xbox and mods, and MS now have a way of controlling the market because any mod on a console excells the sales of it..
Sony, within the past few months have woken up about that.. hence the new ps2 unit with.. funny enough.. Fiber optic sound too! clever of sony.
there are alot of things that can be said by fanbois about which console is better and which is crap.. but the above is fact on how it is here in Australia.. where Sony cares about the ps2 and thus still making games and the unit.. because ps3 sales (truthfully) are shit.
the 360 are doing well, we are being rheemed on that one too... 399 for an arcade unit.. which can be had for 199 if in the us.
so level it out, we pay more.. but we get the support behind it... so think about that!

Sony is losing money off the price of the PS3's. The Blu-Ray player alone should retail (in the states) at near $1000. They're not making them cheap, they're selling them cheap and hoping to make up the money in games and Blu-Ray sales.
I've had mine for more than three months and it comes with a one year warranty.
Have your issues if you want, but I am here to let people know it's a solid piece of equipment that is a complete entertainment console.

it can be expensive to develop yes, but to make a cheap nock off after it hits the shelves is well.. cheap.
for a company to 'loose' money on a device means that they have a poor business practice, but i have no idea how the Sony model works so im not going to dispute it.. but here where i am you can spend 3Grand on a 42" Bravia series TV.. and get a free ps3 with it.. sales are that bad that they have to give them away :P
but to me the price of something blueray is funny..
when you buy a burner, thats about 200$, then you have the BR discs -r (not rw) at 35$ each.
(daylight robbery if you ask me) when you can buy a 160GB hard drive for less then 50$ all up.. almost triple the storage of a BR disc, and more durable too.
and they wonder why they cant shift consoles when they charge that much when you can get something better for cheaper :P
"Have your issues if you want, but I am here to let people know it's a solid piece of equipment that is a complete entertainment console."
Sony market it as a Blueray player, that coincedentally plays games too.. if i could just show you the advertisements i have seen you would chuckle as much as me since you own one.
myself not going near one.. im happy with my every other console but a sony.

Thanks Cyberblade for the Tron Bluray placeholder. That is very promising!
Anyone know the procedure for getting a placeholder on Amazon? What steps are involved and how can it be faked? I want to authenticate this placeholder.
To set the record straight though, the xbox360 is junk. I was unlucky enough to get one during the initial release month, however. that is not why I know it's junk. I know it's junk due to the failure statistics I have researched over and over.
I hated it for being so unreliable, the scratching discs, overheating, rings of death, (obsoleted hd format chosen)list goes on and on. I still giggle when I hear of people purchasing the unit but I don't want to make this a console war. There is a pretty decent sized wiki faq that can be read:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xbox_360_technical_problems
I know so many people who have had the rings of death happen to them on many times, and yet those people contintue to have refurbed units sent to them so they can squeeze another 7 months out of it before the next ring of death occurs, it's a viscious downward spiral of idiocy I am glad to be rid of. a failure rate of close to 35% for anything, is unacceptable in my opinion.
Anyway, I think I will use the Tron (bluray disc) as my catalyst for jumping into the bluray world. The PS3 right now is $399 for the new 80 gig version. Thought I saw the old pricing list above in this thread and wanted to correct it (US price).
It used to be $399 for the 40 gig but in the last 2 weeks that changed, although, the new 80 gig version for $399 doesn't do backwards compatability.
I can't wait for the release of Tron on bluray though. I hope they add a date to that amazon placeholder soon, and I hope it isn't a fake placeholder, or that the placeholders are just wishful thinking. I am hoping that there is a solid reason for that placeholder. I have seen other placeholders come and go on Amazon without releases as well, so we can only hope it's real and substantial.

I bought mine in June for $499 and it does play PS2 games (albeit some with extreme crappitude). Not sure if $100 was worth that , but Oh Well

Indeed, there are now 2 sku's for the 80 gig ps3. The new ones supposedly do not support bc and the old 80's do. The old 80 with bc now has a 160 gig drive.
Bc is equally sucky on both the 360 and ps3 unfortunately. I had to push Microsoft for 6 months for them just to admit some of their bc list games were flawed. Took 6 months to get them to update their website with the admitted flaws. It was a ridiculous ordeal, but that is just how slow some companies are, not just limited to MS though. Many companies have that issue when it comes to updating their website mistakes.
I just hope that the Amazon Tron Bluray placeholder isn't some sort of mistake. I think everyone on this forum should sign up for the notification as a way of showing our support for a bluray version of Tron.

That's a good thing since the latest console war is pretty much over.
Is the 360 perfect? No system is. But as I said to someone recently, arguing over console systems is like arguing over what kind of toaster is superior. If you put crappy bread in the toaster, you'll get crappy toast. Regardless of the high or low quality of said toaster.
In the end, it's all about the games themselves. Not the system you choose to play them on. In the case of the 360 (and most other platforms), there is a large amount of quality games to choose from. Why knock it?

I agree to disagree at this point. If the toaster is too low in quality (360), it could end up burning your house down to the ground. The 360 overheating issues in the beginning (with the powerpack you had to prop up and put a fan on, etc.) was a joke. It was a crazy joke, and consumers should not have to put up with crap like that, among all the other problems with the low quality, and non-existant quality control procedures for the 360.
Again, this is a Tron Bluray thread so I'll try not too mention anything else about the 360. You won't find anyone here who hates the 360 as much as I do however, it's not because I am a huge fan of the ps3, I'm not. I just think companies need to stop releasing subpar equipment on the market.
So, we need a way to investigate this Bluray holder on Amazon. Anyone know how the Amazon templates are created? Can anyone just make a suggestion for a title and set up the e-mail notification template page, or does 'somebody in the know' really have to be involved to create them?

The machine itself is okay. Both the 360 and the PS3 have dark clouds hanging over them that occasionally cause issues. It's become common practice to release buggy technology. Microsoft is not alone in this. Unless you choose to wait until after a product has been out a few years, you run the aforementioned risks. I'm not saying it's acceptable for consumers to be beta testers, but the reality is what it is.
In the end, the Red Ring issues is probably one of the most minor complaints, as the extended warranty covers full no cost replacement. Heat has never been an issue for any 360 system I've ever handled (and having some connections with the gaming industry, I have handled dozens). It gets hot, sure. Doesn't seem to cause any problems.
I remember back to the Atari 2600 as well. I remember going through three of them (on actually caught fire) and having my system refuse to play cartridges with even a trace amount of dust. I burned (not literally) through several of the original 8 bit Nintendo systems as well. I have a small stack of dead PS1s sitting in the garage right now. The only console system I have ever owned that operated reliably was my Nintendo 64. And I've owned just about every console since Pong was released.
In fact, I think that Pong system was just about the worst ever.
I don't know about anyone else here, but i have about 5 non functioning DVD players. About the same amount of broken VCR's and at least two non functional televisions. I have a tablet PC that simply stopped working and a laptop that went the same route. In fact, even my toaster died recently.
The 360 is not unique in it's issues. It's an unfortunate standard of modern technology. Nothing is built to last anymore. Not the 360, not the PS3. Nothing. That is the wonderful benefit to building your own PC. Which many people here will recognize is an unusual stance from me.
