RE: Toys Found at Retail

I'd like to weigh in on the ongoing Spinmaster debate

Credentials: Collected 3 3/4" figures since 1977/78 (wonder what happened that year? Micronauts!) Adult Collector -followed toy biz as a hobby for over 20 years. I read a LOT of toy blogs and reviews. I buy what I can. I have a blog for the "Budget Collector" at budgetscd@blogspot.com

If I were going to give Spinmaster a grade on their Tron:Legacy 3 3/4" Action Figures I'd definitely say they deserve a C, maybe a C+ overall.

Sculpts: B-. On the helmeted figures the sculpts are quite nicely done, the helmets don't look mis-sized and the overall shapes are instantly recognizable. The head sculpts on the human figures (I haven't seen Castor yet) are well done, if you don't consider them to be at all screen accurate. The Kevin Flynn figure looks too much like Obi-Wan-Kenobi in the prequels. I don't know what's under that mask that Sam Flynn is wearing, and frankly I don't wanna know.

Paint: B. I don't have a problem with any of the paint on the non-helmeted figures, it's a little sloppy but that's to be expected in a mass-market line. Again on the human figures it's bloody awful.

Articulation: C. There's quite a few POAs on these guys, unfortunately they're not very well executed. The ball jointed neck on the two I have (Rizler & Black Guard) are little more than swivels and the hips are atrocious. I cannot STAND it when my 1/18th scale figures cannot sit down properly, and these guys cannot. The arms with ball/socket shoulders, swivel and right-angle forearms and a cut wrists are good, but not great. There's no waist articulation at all, due to the light up feature.

Light Up Feature: B+. I'd like it a lot more if the discs could mount on the button properly. Or at all. But the feature itself is pretty cool. The lights are bright and make the figure look awesome.

Accessories: B- Every figure comes with at least a disc and a base, and that's cool at a bare minimum. Some of the figures come with an additional accessory, though I don't recall most of them on screen. The discs are really nicely done and are even painted the correct color. The other accessories, the light-sword and nun-chucks are executed well but really don't offer a whole lot.

Value: C. At their SRP of $10 they're priced well over their value. For comparison MOST other 3 3/4" lines are between a $6 and $9 price point. The newest wave of GI Joe figures is running $8/9 and they come with a better articulated/painted figure and a metric ton of accessories. (Seriously, the newest Snake-Eyes has 12 different accessories).

Fun Factor: B. Hey, they're Tron figures, and as such they automatically qualify as "fun". They also have the discs, that's crucial. The light up is nice as well, but if they had better articulation and worked in the vehicles better, I'd be happier.

Speaking of vehicles - I only have one - Flynn's light cycle - but I do own three of them (they were free). The Black Guard figure will NOT sit inside no matter what I do, but the Rinzler figure does. I've actually put a Microman figure in there just 'cause. Unfortunately I can't figure out what, if anything, changes when you put a figure inside in terms of the light up feature.

I want to point out that I'm not quite as upset over the price as some seem to be, because I've found them on sale. I also have a buy 1 get 1 half off at TRU for this month...somewhere.

Spinmaster hasn't been doing Action Figures all that long, as others have mentioned. Their Last Airbender figures were god-awful and didn't give me much hope for the Tron line in the first place, so when I say they've exceeded my expectations that doesn't mean much because I didn't expect much from them in the first place.

I can only hope that SM is reading these comments and will take them to heart, because let's face it, THEY MAKE FRACKKING TRON ACTION FIGURES! That's just cool in of itself!

I think a lot of the decisions adult collectors feel are odd come down to cost factors and the fact they really tried to make the line kid-friendly and with kid appeal. I think they succeeded. It's not a perfect line. Kevin Flynn's final sculpt/paint app is pretty unforgivable - but I think they did a lot more right than wrong. Love the selections, love the vehicles and the detail. The discs are great looking. The diecast are nearly perfect.

I hope we see Series 3 (seems like we will, with the recent solicits and Previews) and beyond. And I hope they keep pushing the limits if they do toys for Uprising or the next movie.

My big problems, in reverse order of importance to me are:

5. QC in paint apps and overall look from the factory. The scratches and smudging on the Light Jets are very bad. Some paint on the figures is sloppy or not thick enough so the black shows through.

4. Sculpts and paint apps on faces. I think Jarvis looks good. Sam isn't bad but sort of generic. Kevin Flynn has already been discussed. I don't think it's bad, but a little more care and detail here could only help.

3. Improve selection of Deluxe figures.

2. Light-up features - need a "constant on" feature.

1. Articulation engineering. To me this is the biggest problem. Mostly in their hips. The hip articulation is nearly useless. I think the rest is pretty good though. I do think it's a bit odd that the Ultimate figure seems to have less articulation than some of the smaller figures when you'd think it'd go up.abortion pills online abortion pill online purchase cytotec abortion

On a separate note:

For those who ordered the "series 2" Black Guard and Sam Flynn, when they arrived at your domicile, were the on "Series 2" packaging, or did they still have series 1 packaging?

Damn, now that does suck. You'd think that they WOULD be repaints in Series 2, not just the exact same figure.

Sigh...I do hope we'll GET the repaints at some point.

Yeah, they were on series 2 cards. Not only that, but Disneystore.com puts HUGE item stickers on the packages. So if you're a collector, you may want to buy from a regular store to avoid having to tear those huge things off and accidentally tear up the package.order abortion pill abortion pill buy online where to buy abortion pill

the more i come to this thread the more i see it trying to become the AFA.

here are my thoughts:

I own all the figures (though few exceptions), few die cast other than the toysrus exclusives, all deluxe id discs & only the sam frisbee. Don't see any reason to buy the rinzler version as it's simply a repaint; waste of money.

Thus far, i am ok with the 7 inch figures as by far the ones i like the most. the smaller ones are ok. Jarvis is buy far the best sculpt. series 2 clu is also great (well the color scheme is correct) as well as rinzler (that's just my thoughts) quorra is mediocre.

now onto future details:

I have no doubt a 7 inch of the following will occur:

quorra, possible jarvis & castor (this is IF the line continues)

if series 3 consists of the tron legacy game then ehh, i don't know. I do however agree that if QC bumps up it's sculpts on these figures then it would be much better. We really can't compare these toys to other big cheese toy companies as they are just starting out with action figures from what i recall.

Doesn't matter if Spin Masters is the new kid on the block. They had better step up their quality i.e. sculpts, paints, durability and their distribution (more core movie characters) otherwise they aren't going to last.

Action Figure Authority, I'm guessing.

That said, I've gotta ask, does anyone have any info on when series 3 might hypothetically roll out?

After weeks of hoping and searching, it seems like Wal-Mart decided to surprise me a second time. A week or so back, I found the die-cast light jets and grid limo, now I go to find ONE 12" Clu (sans katana, ugh) and ONE Jarvis. I snatched those up so fast, man.

I don't have the 12" Sam, however. I've been holding off for one reason or another. Now I feel obligated to complete the set.

The subject of hasbro came up a few times, I noticed, and I just thought I'd say this here.

Hasbro makes great figures, right? They're a big company, and they're big for a reason. Detail, good articulation, and terrific kid appeal.

My Iron Monger from Iron Man (2008). Love this figure. But...

Maybe it's just impossible to make an action figure actually look like Jeff Bridges?

Heck yeah. I'm about to head up to our local collectible toy shop and see if I can get some loose figures to mess with. I've never tried modding a figure before, so I want some that I don't have emotional attachment to before I go trying to spiff up my Tron figs.

Walmart.com has the 12" Sam for $19. A good price, but I just want more of the 3.75" figures. For $19, I could pick up two more Sentries.

Walmart.com also has Kevin Flynn's Lightcycle for $9. Ordered 6 to paint them 3 blue, 1 yellow, 1 orange, and 1 red.

Checked out both TRU and Target today for Tron toys.

TRU has a 25% off ALL Tron toys this weekend. The one I went to on Jefferson in Los Angeles didn't have a whole lot left.

Target ALSO has a sale where all of the "deluxe" toys were $13.79, including deluxe discs and the 1 man light jet. They had a couple of Series 2 figures, but they were the "repaints" of Clu. No Quorra or Jarvis.
